Honua Kai Resort & Spa Convention Facilities

Hold a Convention at the Honua Kai Resort & Spa!

Up to 50 people

OK, so the 2 900 sq ft meeting convention rooms would be nothing for Vegas but on Ka’anapali Beach they mean 50 folks can hold a convention in paradise – per room.

It costs $500 to rent each room for an entire day and $250 for half a day.  In reality each convention room seats 25 people comfortably.  Like most convention resorts you get a price break when you book more villas.  If you have an interest in holding a meeting or convention at the Honua Kai I would call the Honua Kai and ask for the Director of Owner Relations for availability and pricing.  The phone number for the Honua Kai Resort & Spa is 808-662-2801.

Meals can be catered from the 2 fine restaurants at the Honua Kai – The Aina Restaurant and Duke’s Restaurant would be glad to cater the meals and drinks.

So your only job now is to concoct a reason to have a convention at the Honua Kai – all your personnel are rooting for you!!

Best Brunch/Buffet

This entry is part 32 of 32 in the series 2010 Best of Maui

Sunday Morning Brunch in Maui

Maui Sunday Brunch

Every Sunday morning you will find my wife and I at the #1 place in Maui for a Sunday morning buffet.  This is a no-brainer since we normally get to Maui at 4 PM on a Saturday and Sunday morning has our internal clock off by 5 hours and we are ravenously hungry Sunday morning.

Here are the three winners:

  • #1 Place – Ka’anapali Beach Hotel
  • #2 Place – Makena Beach & Golf Resort
  • #3 Place – Grand Dining Room at Grand Wailea Resort Hotel & Spa

Maui Prince Hotel

Best Sunday Brunch and within walking distance!

Best Sunday Brunch and within walking distance!

This is a nice old-old resort that we have Sunday Brunch every time we visit the Honua Kai; you can walk there!  It’s about a 25 minute walk and is south of Black Rock.  Walking along the beach, on the great Ka’anapali board walk, Sunday morning is just fantastic.  The Hawaiian views of Maui and the Pacific ocean get us ready for the feast we are about to devour!

Makena Beach & Golf Resort

Makena Beach and Golf Resort

I’m going to be honest and tell you I’ve not had brunch at this resort – it’s way way south Maui and when we are down in that area it’s past brunch time. I will say that all the reviews I read indicate that it’s a fine brunch.

Grand Wailea Resort Hotel & Spa

grand_wailea

We have friends that have Sunday Brunch at the Grand Wailea all the time – it’s their big splurge while on Maui.  The Sunday brunch is astronomical along with the price.  For the money I’d rather go to the #1 Sunday Brunch near the Honua Kai and go whale watching for the same price.

The Grand Wailea is a 45 minute drive south from the Honua Kai.

Sam Sato’s

Honua Kai Resort & Spa - Sam Satos

Tucked away in Wailuku Millyard, Sam Sato’s is a little gem with a long history on Maui. Founded in 1933, the first Sam Sato’s was at Camp 3 in Sprecklesville. Over the decades, it moved to Puunene, then Happy Valley—and since 1993 its latest incarnation has been at 1750 Wili Pa Loop

“My grandparents founded Sam Sato’s,” says Kirk Toma. “My parents, Charles and Lynne Toma, are still very much involved. My sister, Keri, helps out too. ”Basically, it’s a breakfast and lunch spot from7 a.m. to 2 p.m. and you can pick up Manju until 4 p.m.”

Themanju, or Japanese sweet rice cakes, are all baked in house, as are the turnovers —the latter with fruit flavors such as peach, apple, blueberry, coconut, and pineapple coconut. Different designs on the crust guide you to what’s inside. “Our dry noodles are really popular,” says Kirk. We cook them with bean sprouts, green onions and char siu. They go really well with our barbecue-beef sticks. Other noodle dishes include super dry with veggies along with saimin, won-ton mein and chow fun.” You may order take-out noodles in small, medium, large and extra large pans for parties at home.

Diners also love local plate lunches of hamburger steak, stew, spare ribs, beef tomato and yakitori. Sides include kimchee, and thickly-cut French fries with the uniquely Maui-style dip of mayonnaise and mustard. “The beef tomato at Sam Sato’s is out of this world,” says Mickey Helm of Wailuku.

Best Coffee House in Maui

This entry is part 30 of 32 in the series 2010 Best of Maui

Best Coffee in Maui?

Quick – name the ONLY state of the United States that grows and produces coffee?  Hawaii of course.  When we visit Maui we drink Maui/Hawaiian coffee.  So which coffee-houses on Maui are the best?  Here’s the winners:

  • 1st Place – Aina at the Honua Kai Resort & Spa
  • 2nd Place – Starbucks
  • 3rd  Place – Maui Coffee Roasters

Aina Coffee House in the Honua Kai Resort & Spa

Aina at the Honua Kai Resort & Spa

You would expect nothing less – Maui’s premier 5-star resort, the Honua Kai Resort & Spa,  is going to have the #1 coffee house on Maui.  For all the guests and owners at the Honua Kai this is a great way to support your 1st class resort and keep Aina busy and healthy.

Aina is about to start room service and you won’t even have to put on shorts and an Aloha shirt to enjoy their fine coffee products and pastries.

If you’re like me our first morning in Maui has my stomach 4 hours ahead of Maui time.  So at 7 am Maui time my stomach tells me its 11 am back in St. Louis and I’m ready for espresso and a latte and a cappuccino all rolled up into one huge coffee and head to Aina to wake up.  Of course you can’t drink coffee without a huge blueberry muffin and I’m ready to sit out in the open air lobby of the Honua Kai and enjoy our first morning on Maui.

Funny thing is every morning at the Honua Kai starts out that way…

Real Maui Coffee-House!

Real Maui Coffee-House!

Now this is a REAL Maui Coffee-House and available ONLY in the Hawaiian Islands!  Sadly this coffee-house is on the Road to Hana up by the airport; its a 30 minute drive from the Honua Kai.  But, if you plan to drive the Road to Hana then this is a great place to get some Java.

We have stopped at the coffee-house and it feels like a Hawaiian coffee-house – its a fun place to visit.

Gazebos, Cabanas, and Chars at the Pool

Pool Furniture

If you plan to spend the day around the pool or at the beach you can rent furniture from the Honua Kai Pool Service Shacks.  You can grab your own piece of pool/ocean for a full day or half a day.

Gazebo

Rent a gazebo for a full day for $45 or starting at noon for $35 for the rest of the day.  Up to 3 pool chairs can fit in the gazebo.  Act like Donald Trump and carve out your piece of the pool for the day. It’s a lot of fun to just read a book without moving every 30 minutes to stay in the shade.  Ka’anapali has afternoon “Spritzes” of rain that last a few minutes and you are totally protected.

Cabanas are two pool chairs together with a clam-shell type of cover that folds up and down.  They rent for $35 for a full day and $25 starting at noon.  Only your face and upper body are protected from the sun.  For $10 more you can rent a gazebo which is much nicer.

Chairs and Chairs with a hood by the beach: If you plan to spend time on the beach you will see chairs near the edge of the beach cable locked to a pole.  Beach chairs can be rented for $10 for the entire day or $5 starting at noon.  A hooded version of the beach chair rents for $20 a day and $10 starting at noon.

All these rentals are done at the Pool Service Shacks.

Best Restaurant Ambience in Maui

This entry is part 29 of 32 in the series 2010 Best of Maui

Ambience – it’s a nice thing to have!

Maui Ambience

Maui Ambience

If you brought your tuxedo with you to Maui you will be sadly disappointed – nobody wears them here. Getting all dressed up on Maui is to put on an Aloha shirt! The ambience in Maui usually means surrounded by ocean vistas and tropical gardens.  A closed room with air-conditioning is fine on the mainland but that’s not why folks come to Maui.  There are 3 winners:

  • 1st Place – Mama’s Fish House
  • 2nd Place – Humuhumunukunukuapua‘a Restaurant at GrandWailea Resort Hotel & Spa
  • 3rd Place – Sarento’s on the Beach

Mama’s Fish House

Mama's Fish House

Who hasn’t been to Mama’s Fish House?  Well if that’s you then just call to make a reservation – you will not be disappointed.  Click here to see a video of Mama’s Fish House.  It’s expensive but that’s what you would expect to pay for such a fine restaurant with a stellar reputation.

Mama’s is a 30 minute drive from the Honua Kai and well worth the drive.  There is NO way you can tell folks you sampled Maui’s fine fish if you haven’t eaten at Mama’s.  We eat there at lease once on every visit to Maui and the Honua Kai.  Reservations should be made weeks before your dinner and months before if this is a holiday night.

This fine restaurant floats on a pond with fantastic views of the ocean.  This is truly a night you will remember for a long time.  Make reservations at least one month in advance of your visit to Maui and if its a holiday night plan on several months in advance.

Sarento’s on the Beach is superb, five-star regional Italian cuisine with a Mediterranean flair. Specialties include award-winning presentations of prime steaks, homemade pastas, fresh Hawaiian seafood, signature veal, lamb, chicken & pork dishes. Creative preparations of classic Italian desserts are their speciality.

Free Parking in the Ka’anapali Area

Why blow $5 to $30 in parking fees a night, when dining and shopping in Maui, when you can find free parking nearby?  I’d rather spend the money drinking or dining with the family.  Pay parking lots are all around Ka’anapali and Lahaina – I won’t talk about those easy to find money pits.  Here are the secret FREE parking locations that are just as convenient to shopping and dining – Shhhhh don’t tell anyone.

Beach Access Parking Lots:

This is the true hidden gem of FREE parking in Maui – look for the blue and white signs; some are round and some are square.  Maui demands that the when resorts are built beach access roads and parking lots be built for free and given to Maui before building permits are issued.  So around EVERY large resort you will see the blue and white access signs.  Unless you know what to look for you will overlook them.  Parking is free and unlimited.  Locals construction workers like to park there during the day but at 4 PM they clear out.

North of the Honua Kai there is a HUGE beach access that we owners paid for with higher purchase price from the building permits that demanded about 10 acres of free parks and parking.  Well folks dining at Duke’s park in the lot and don’t have to pay Honua Kai a penny in parking – why not.

Whalers’ Village:

You can get 3 hours of FREE parking by parking at the paid parking lot and spending at least $15 at some of the shops in Whalers’ Village.  The ABC store is a minimum of $15 but each store has its own minimum – find out before you buy at a store.
TRULY FREE PARKING @ WHALERS VILLAGE, On a Space Available Basis
In addition to the Whalers Village pay garage described above, there is another, little known “Beach Access” parking lot, located about 50 yards south of the Village (towards Lahaina); it is actually a long, narrow area squeezed in between the Village and the Westin Hotel. It is identified by a small, rather nondescript, blue sign for “Beach Access,” and is intended for persons wanting to visit Kaanapali Beach for “recreational purposes” (swimming, boating, hiking, visiting sacred sites…”). There are about 47 parking spots here, each specifically labeled “Beach Access,” and SCATTERED throughout this long, strip lot (containing about 100+ total spaces), which runs perpendicular to the ocean.

There are two caveats, however: (1) There are an even larger number of parking spaces which are for private or commercial use, and vehicles will be towed for violating their use; and (2) the 47 “Beach Access” spaces supposedly “go quick” most mornings, although turnover may be much greater in the afternoons and evenings. My personal belief is that most of these spots are being illegally used by workers and commercial vehicles at the Village (without any enforcement against their use); I suspect that there is actually very little “turnover” among these spaces.

This space is available seven days a week, and offers an inexpensive way to visit Kaanapali Beach all day long, particularly if you arrive early. Weekend use by local residents is believed to make this space even scarcer. There is no time limit, but overnight parking is NOT allowed. NOTE: Technically, evening visitors to the Village do not meet the “recreational purposes” definition for this parking area, but this rule is apparently not enforced.

MORE TRULY FREE, “BEACH ACCESS” PARKING LOTS, as available
There are 5 hotel parking lots, located directly alongside the ocean side of Kaanapali Parkway, all of which have a FEW FREE parking spaces, on a very limited basis. Each can be identified from the Parkway by small, blue and white signs labeled either “Shoreline Access,” or “Parking – Beach Users Only.” Each free lot is physically separate from the main parking lot of each associated hotel. Open spaces are reportedly difficult to actually obtain, with most being taken early in the AM. Turnover does occur, and is believed to be much greater in the afternoons and evenings: You just have to get lucky!

Free parking spaces may be found at the following lots:
Sheraton Maui (inside the ground floor corner of the main, pay Sheraton concrete garage, this physically separate garage entrance is at the SOUTH border of the Sheraton property and contains 21 spaces).

Kaanapali Beach Hotel (mostly low rise buildings, just south of the Sheraton), has 10 spaces and are reached by entering the main driveway to the lobby: the spaces are to the right of the lobby, at the northern corner of the lot…and clearly labeled “Beach Parking Only.”

Kaanapali Alii (located between the Kaanapali Alii condominiums and the Marriott), and totally separate from the main Alii parking lot; this tiny lot has a mere 10 parking spaces; a white-and-black sign INSIDE the lot says “Beach Parking Only.”

Maui Marriott (located within the entrance to the main Marriott lot, but just outside of a large concrete garage; contains just 10 spaces)

Hyatt Hotel (located at the south border of the Hyatt, sharing a large parking lot mainly intended for some Hyatt guests and service vehicles; this area offers most of two rows of 23 public parking spaces. This is reached via a long “service road” between the Hyatt and the golf course; one helpful HINT is to follow the sign that reads “Luau Parking.” There are blue and white signs INSIDE the lot which read “Beach Access Parking,” and specific spaces are so labeled on the pavement. [This area is deceptively hidden, but is a large lot to the south of all the Hyatt buildings.] The Hyatt is located at the southernmost border of Kaanapali Beach, making this lot the furthest distance from Whalers Village: It’s about a 15-20 minute walk.

A seemingly good strategy for finding FREE parking would be to drive directly to the Sheraton (follow the Kaanapali Parkway to the most northerly hotel (the Sheraton), and check to see if space exists inside its covered SOUTH corner of the lot. Continue driving South from there, checking at the large lot between the Village and the Westin Hotel, try your luck at the tiny lots near the Kaanapali Alii and Marriott, and finish by looking in the hard-to-find Hyatt lot. If you decide to pay, the Kaanapali Beach Hotel has the least expensive parking = $10/day.

ALTERNATIVE FREE PARKING, ONE MILE FROM WHALERS VILLAGE, is an easy stroll along a beautiful beach and resort parkway:
Visitors who enjoy walking (and free parking) should consider parking at Kahekili Beach County Park (totally free, and LOTS of space…perhaps for 100+ cars). This park is NORTH of Whalers Village, and located at the very southern edge of the Westin Kaanapali Ocean Resort Villas; it is about a 25 minute walk to reach Whalers Village…and you will enjoy every minute getting there and back.

If you are primarily interested in just “walking ALONG the beach,” starting at Kahekili Park is an easy and beautiful PAVED stroll along the shore, thru 2 attractive hotel properties (the Royal Lahaina, and Maui Kaanapali Villas, both of which welcome walkabout visitors), and stretching around (and thru) the Sheraton Hotel…and then along the paved Kaanapali Beachwalk leading to the Village…and even beyond to the Hyatt. It’s an easy and gorgeous walk alongside the ocean and the beach, borders a lush golf course and lots of swaying palm trees, and passes seven major resort properties…all with gorgeous grounds, fancy lobbies, and pools for your viewing: IT’S ALL GOOD

Hey, if you plan on walking a lot anyway, it doesn’t make any difference if you start at the free Kahekili Park or at any of the Kaanapali parking lots, IF you are going to be walking between both areas. You can easily make a full day of beach enjoyment by parking at Kahekili, strolling one mile to Whalers Village, and taking your time to visit all 7 major resort properties, lobbies, lush vegetation, and elaborate grounds. There is also excellent swimming at Kahekili Beach Park, which is adjacent to a spectacularly beautiful beach that stretches for about one-half mile to the northern edge of Sheraton @ Black Rock. This beach is actually just as pretty as the famed Kaanapali Beach that is south of the Sheraton…and is never crowded or even “busy.”

Just to put this walk into perspective: Timeshare owners and guests at the popular Westin Kaanapali Ocean Resort Villas consider themselves very fortunate to be located on this long stretch of beach that borders their resort and Kahekili Park. Many of these folks stroll and jog this walkway to Whalers Village and beyond EVERY day! [To be completely truthful, there are probably more of them that ride the free shuttle between their Villas and the Westin Hotel, which is adjacent to the Village!]
