Maui Ocean Center

This entry is part 7 of 9 in the series Things to do on Maui

A “Must see” while on Maui

Maui has it’s own aquarium – the Maui Ocean Center.  The aquarium is just a 20 minute drive south from the Honua Kai.  We visit the aquarium each visit to Maui – it’s a lot of fun for the whole family.  This is a great way to support folks who live on Maui and make the island the best island in the world.

MOC tunnelThe aquarium has a “water tunnel” that allows you to walk under the surface and watch all the fish swim by.  Make sure you bring your camera since you can snap a picture of a huge shark just inches away from the folks.

Lots of huge turtles!

Lots of huge turtles!

The Maui Ocean Center cost about $20 million to build and opened in March of 1998.  It takes about 3 hours to completely visit all the exhibits and while there you can grab lunch/snack at the aquarium’s two restaurants.  You don’t need to buy tickets in advance and makes a great “rainy day”activity that everyone in the family can enjoy.

The gift shop has items that can ONLY be found at the aquarium – so if you see something that looks great buy it then and there since you might not see it cheaper anyplace else on Maui.

About 450,000 folks a year visit the aquarium.  It’s open 365 days a year from 9 am – 5 pm (9 am to 6 pm in July and August).
